The last things are inevitably dealt with at the last minute. Dying and death are delegated to a multitude of professional actors. For the project "Last Minute", the Stapferhaus asked intensive care nurses, oncologists, journalists, funeral directors, hospital chaplains, grave-makers, notaries, euthanasia assistants, paramedics, nursing home directors and many more about how they deal with death.
The Stapferhaus has carried the voices into an exhibition, a book, a teaching aid and a series of events, and finally into a theatre production (directed by Volker Hesse). They all show that the question of how to deal with death radically raises the question of how to deal with life. The culture of dying reflects the defining values and norms of our society at the end of the 20th century.
