Heimat

We talk a lot about Heimat – a term very unique to the German language, which in English could be loosely understood as homeland or home. We talk about losing a homeland, about finding a new one or about a homeland that perhaps no longer is what it once was. But, what exactly is Heimat? A place or a feeling? A nation or a childhood memory? And what kind of Heimat do we want?

For the "Heimat" project, the Stapferhaus travelled through Switzerland, invited more than 600 people to a Ferris wheel ride on five different fairgrounds across the country and a subsequent conversation about Heimat. This resulted in a representative study and a 40-minute film, as well as an eventful exhibition at the Zeughaus Lenzburg which lasted 12 months, accompanied by workshops, a series of events, didactic materials and the publication "Heimat. A borderline experience".
